ThriveWell Cancer Foundation - San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project

In 2012, Anthony Tolcher, M.D. and the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation launched the the San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project, an ambitious cancer research project that no other group or city has done before. The bold initiative performs whole genome sequencing on tumors from patients with the 10 most common cancers in San Antonio. The genomic data linked to patients’ clinical course will help the researchers better understand which genetic errors are important for prognosis, which respond to currently available therapy, and which ones may be important in the future to develop medicines needed to treat cancer effectively. The data collected will be an enormous resource for cancer doctors across the globe and will bring fresh ideas from outside the current cancer research community.
