108 Holes, 8 Caddies, 3 Balls, and 1 Pink Elephant

On July 2, I started my hike with anticipation, a little nervousness, and the memory of my father-in-law, Allan Klein, at the top of mind. At 5:35 in the morning, with my wife Kerry and brother-in-law Gregg by my side, I teed off at hole 1. Throughout the day, I was joined by many friends and family who caddied, walked some holes with us, and otherwise tried to keep me distracted from the task at hand.

While it was certainly a physical grind, as the day wore on and the heat increased, I found that the real difficulty with a golf marathon like this was the mental aspect of maintaining concentration and sanity for 14 hours. Around hole 70, my mind began to play tricks on me and I'm convinced that I saw a plane attempt to land on the course and I'm pretty sure I saw a pink elephant crossing the 17th fairway. Due to some quality caddying and strong encouragement from friends and family, I was somehow able to trudge on and played some decent golf the rest of the day (with that said, I've since seen some video of my drives on Holes 100 and 101, and needless to say, Peter Kostis would not be proud).

I completed my 100 hole at 6:45, and then played the rest of my sixth round to conclude my effort at 7:30, 108 holes and 5 birdies later. For those keeping score, I shot 80, 80, 82, 80, 83, and 82 for an average of 81. I played each round in an average of 2 hours, 10 minutes.

It was truly a memorable day; one that I'll never forget. I want to thank everyone who was out on the course with me on Monday, who has offered words of encouragement during this endeavor, or who have pledged their support for our charity. It means so much to our family.
